About Gateway Osteopathy & Pilates

Independent practitioners. Shared values. A welcoming place for care.

Gateway Osteopathy & Pilates has been part of the Eltham community since 2011, providing a professional and welcoming environment where osteopaths and other healthcare practitioners can practise and care for their patients.

The practitioners at Gateway bring their own experience, clinical interests and individual approach to patient care. What brings us together is a shared belief in listening to patients, understanding the person behind the presentation and helping people make informed decisions about their health.

We understand conditions. We treat people.

The Gateway Way

There is rarely one approach that is right for every person.

People come to Gateway at different ages, with different lifestyles, health histories, injuries and goals. Practitioners bring their own experience and professional judgement to each consultation rather than following a prescribed Gateway treatment formula.

While approaches may differ between practitioners, the people who choose to practise at Gateway tend to share some common values:

  • Taking the time to listen and understand the person behind the presentation
  • Providing thoughtful, individualised care
  • Communicating clearly about assessment and treatment options
  • Supporting patients to participate in decisions about their care
  • Continuing to learn and develop professionally
  • Recognising the value of movement, exercise and rehabilitation where appropriate
  • Working collaboratively with other health professionals when this may benefit the patient

These shared values are what we think of as the Gateway Way.

Your Care, Your Choice

One of the things we are most proud of at Gateway is the collaborative culture that has developed between practitioners.

While many patients naturally develop a strong relationship with a particular practitioner, we don’t believe you should ever feel that you “belong” to one practitioner.

You choose who you see.

If your usual practitioner is away, unavailable, or you simply need an appointment sooner, you are welcome to see another practitioner at Gateway. There may also be times when a practitioner suggests seeing a colleague whose experience or particular areas of interest may be helpful.

Practitioners at Gateway are encouraged to support this approach rather than viewing patients as belonging to an individual practitioner.

This means you can build a relationship with your regular osteopath while still having access to other practitioners at Gateway when you need them.

This philosophy has been encouraged at Gateway from the beginning:

Your needs and choices come before practitioner ownership of the patient relationship.

How Gateway Works

Gateway is home to healthcare practitioners who practise with professional and clinical independence.

Gateway provides the clinical environment, facilities and practice support that allow practitioners to focus on caring for their patients. Practitioners working from Gateway are appropriately qualified and are expected to maintain the professional registration and insurance relevant to the services they provide.

Importantly, each practitioner exercises their own professional judgement.

Your practitioner is responsible for assessing your individual circumstances, discussing treatment options with you and making their own clinical decisions about the care they provide.

Gateway does not prescribe a particular treatment method or direct practitioners as to the clinical decisions they should make for individual patients.

This means that while practitioners at Gateway share a professional environment and many common values, each brings their own experience, areas of interest and approach to practice.

Our Story

Gateway Osteopathy & Pilates was established in Eltham in 2011 with the aim of creating a clinic that combined professional healthcare with a friendly, community-based environment.

Over the years Gateway has grown and changed, but our connection with the local community has remained an important part of who we are.

We’ve had the privilege of seeing people through many different stages of life, from children and young athletes through to parents, weekend warriors, working professionals and older members of our community.

Some patients have been visiting practitioners at Gateway for many years. Others may come to us for help with a particular problem and then not need us again for a long time.

Both are perfectly okay.

Our aim is not to create dependence on treatment. We want to help people better understand their bodies, make informed decisions about their care and, wherever possible, keep doing the things that are important to them.

Different Practitioners, Different Areas of Interest

One of the advantages of having a number of practitioners working from Gateway is that everyone brings something different.

Some practitioners have particular interests in sporting injuries or rehabilitation. Others have additional experience or interests in areas such as pregnancy and postpartum care, paediatrics, persistent pain, headaches, jaw pain, spinal complaints or exercise rehabilitation.

That diversity also supports our Your Care, Your Choice philosophy.

Sometimes the practitioner you’ve been seeing is exactly the person you want to continue with. At other times, another practitioner’s availability, experience or area of interest may make them a good option.

If you’re unsure who might be appropriate for you, our reception team can help you explore the practitioners available and their areas of interest.

Osteopathy, Movement and Rehabilitation

Hands-on treatment can be useful, but it is not always the whole answer.

Depending upon your circumstances, your practitioner may discuss movement, exercise, rehabilitation, activity modification or other strategies that can complement treatment and help you work towards your goals.

Gateway also has a fully equipped Pilates and rehabilitation studio, allowing appropriately qualified practitioners and instructors to incorporate individual and small-group exercise into care where suitable.

A Culture of Learning and Collaboration

Professional independence doesn’t mean practising in isolation.

Gateway provides an environment where practitioners can discuss ideas, learn from one another and continue developing professionally while retaining responsibility for their own clinical decisions.

More experienced practitioners can share knowledge and experience with practitioners earlier in their careers, while every practitioner brings their own perspectives, interests and experiences to the group.

We believe that creating an environment where practitioners are comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and referring to one another ultimately creates a better experience for patients as well.

Interested in Practising at Gateway?

Gateway provides opportunities for suitably qualified healthcare practitioners looking for an established professional environment from which to practise.

Different practice arrangements may be available depending upon the nature of the practitioner’s services, experience and circumstances. These may range from independent room-based practice arrangements through to practitioner service or subcontracting arrangements that include additional practice and administrative support.

Whatever the arrangement, practitioners retain responsibility for their professional practice and clinical decisions while contributing positively to the wider Gateway environment.

We’re particularly interested in practitioners who value:

  • Professional and patient-centred care
  • Clinical independence and professional responsibility
  • Ongoing learning and development
  • Collaboration with other practitioners
  • Patient choice
  • A friendly and respectful professional environment
  • Building relationships within the local community

If you’re a healthcare practitioner interested in practising from Gateway, we’d be happy to hear from you.
